Cleveland Fire Brigade - About Us

Cleveland Fire Brigade is the statutory fire and rescue service covering the boroughs of Hartlepool, Middlesbrough, Redcar and Cleveland & Stockton-on-Tees. Our protection, prevention, and emergency response services are provided by 760 staff, the majority of which are based in 15 strategically placed fire stations, serving a population of 558,206 in 234,660 domestic dwellings.

Firefighting in Cleveland represents one of the biggest challenges in the UK Fire and Rescue Service. No where in the UK will you find so many people living so closely to a major chemical production area, with 9,000 to 11,000 tanker movements a day, and 37 top tier control of major hazards (COMAH) sites and 10 lower tier ones; 12 % of national COMAH sites are in Cleveland. The Brigade also provides cover for two nuclear reactors, and a gas fuelled power station at Wilton, as well as the Tees and Hartlepool port Authority and shared coverage of an international airport.

The Brigade aims to prevent loss of life and injuries from emergency incidents and reducing the risk in the community and provides excellent community safety services delivered by a competent and diverse workforce. We now have some of the safest homes and roads in the UK, and are active partners in improving the quality of life for local people as well as delivering value for money services.

All this is captured in our vision statement:
‘Our vision is to continue to make a positive difference to every local citizen’s safety and quality of life and the places where they live and work. We fully understand their diverse needs and respond with a wide range of excellent value for money, integrated, community services.

We are nationally recognised by other Fire and Rescue Services as being innovative and high performing; our partners value our influence and contribution in delivering shared services and our ability to reduce risk in business, industry and the home is internationally renowned.

People want to work for us; we are a reputable employer of choice recognised through staff passion, professionalism and pride.’

Apart from recruiting whole time and part-time community firefighters, we offer job opportunities across a wide range of disciplines from admin support to community advocates dealing with vulnerable groups to vehicle support technicians. We also employ a number of control room staff who undertake the vital role of answering and dealing with emergency calls, and making sure firefighters are supported at each and every incident.
