Middlesbrough Council - About Us

Middlesbrough is at the heart of the Tees Valley and sits between two of the North's greatest historic destinations, Durham and Whitby.

Middlesbrough's vibrant cultural and entertainment scene includes the impressive contemporary visual art gallery - mima, and Temenos - a bold contemporary art structure, created by the world-renowned artist Anish Kapoor and pioneering structural engineer Cecil Balmond, to recall the engineering and industrial heritage of Middlesbrough. Other highlights include Middlesbrough Centre Square – a world-class location for cultural activity of all kinds, as well as the old dockland, Middlehaven, which is set for a £500 million transformation into a bustling waterfront attraction.

A lively events programme reflect the town's passion for live entertainment, art and music, including regular concerts by big name bands and comedy acts at the Town Hall, and a popular rolling events calendar.

The town centre boasts many high street and designer shops, including the award winning Psyche Department Store, as well as a wide variety of bars, clubs and restaurants.

There is a lot to see in and around Middlesbrough including the Captain Cook Birthplace Museum, Stewart Park, Nature’s World, the Dorman Museum and the iconic Transporter Bridge.

Let’s not forget about sport - Middlesbrough Football Club is supported by thousands of devoted fans and Middlesbrough hosts one of the major annual 10k road races in the country, as well as having the fantastic Prissick Skate Plaza.

Like to get away from the bustle of the town? Middlesbrough is right next to the North Yorkshire Moors, Cleveland Way and one of the North East's most famous landmarks, Roseberry Topping.
